case study
Burger Food Group has been working with PackBack for over two years to implement and scale a reusable cup system across its Burger King restaurants.
Starting with an initial pilot, the system proved its ability to operate seamlessly in high-volume environments. Following this success, PackBack was expanded earlier this year to additional locations, demonstrating strong operational fit within fast-paced restaurant environments without disrupting service.
Burger Food Group is the largest Burger King franchisee in the Netherlands, operating high-volume restaurants across the country. PackBack is currently deployed across 20 locations, serving high beverage volumes across both dine-in and takeaway orders.
Quick service restaurants operate in environments where speed, efficiency, and reliability are critical. Even small changes to workflows can impact service during peak hours, making seamless integration essential.

If you look purely at operations, efficiency and implementation — it is a very strong business case.

Reusable packaging is becoming an increasing priority for the food service industry.
Since 2024, Dutch legislation requires reusable options for on-site consumption, with broader European requirements expected in the coming years.
For Burger Food Group, the challenge was not only compliance. The system needed to perform reliably in fast-paced restaurants handling high order volumes every day without adding complexity during peak hours.
Key requirements included:
● Efficient and intuitive cup collection
● No disruption to staff workflows
● High and consistent return behaviour from guests
● Reliable performance during peak hours
● Visibility into system performance across locations
Burger Food Group partnered with PackBack to implement a reusable cup system designed specifically for high-volume food service environments.
The system integrates directly into existing restaurant workflows, requiring minimal change to daily operations.
PackBack has been successfully deployed across 20 Burger King restaurants operated by Burger Food Group.
Following the initial rollout, Burger Food Group expanded the system earlier this year to six additional restaurants, replacing a previously used reuse solution.
Across locations, the system integrates seamlessly into daily operations and performs reliably in high-volume environments.
Customers adapt quickly to the system, while staff are able to maintain speed and efficiency during peak hours.
Importantly, reusable cups for takeaway orders create an additional touchpoint with guests giving them a reason to return to the restaurant to complete the loop.

For Burger King restaurants operated by Burger Food Group, reusable cups needed to work not only environmentally, but also operationally and economically. Reusable packaging is often seen as a sustainability initiative. For companies considering the transition from single-use packaging to reusable cups, Patrick de Jong offers clear advice:
“Choose a system that is proven and easy for employees and guests.”
For Burger Food Group, it has proven to be an operationally viable system at scale.
PackBack helps high-volume food service locations transition from single-use packaging to reuse without adding operational friction.
